A HISTORIC Scottish castle is due to reopen in April, months ahead of schedule.
The historic site once hosted Mary Queen of Scots in 1562 as well as James VI in 1580 and 1589.
Safety inspections led to the castle being closed during the pandemic, despite a spike in popularity, drawing 6,500 visitors in 2019.
The castle was originally expected to reopen in the summer, according to Visit Angus.
Historic Environment Scotland (HES) said 500-year-old Edzell Castle will reopen in April.
But it will only be on “selected dates”, which have yet to be confirmed.
It opened briefly in summer 2021 following the relaxation of lockdown restrictions.
It was one of around 70 HES properties affected, including Arbroath Abbey.
Last autumn, HES hosted an open weekend at Edzell Castle.
Edzell Castle was home to the Lindsays, a noble family who acquired the estate in 1358. The seat was a motte and bailey residence near a medieval church.
In the 1500s, the family built a brand new castle – which stands to this day.
