500,000 Texans Without Power After Severe Weather Strikes

People walk along a street during a power outage, in Bejucal

Recent severe weather in Texas has left a trail of destruction, with half a million people still without power this morning. The state was battered by heavy rain and hurricane-force winds, causing significant damage across various regions.

Tragically, a 16-year-old boy lost his life when a home under construction collapsed just outside of Houston due to the strong winds. Wind gusts exceeding 85 miles per hour have been reported in some areas, leading to the destruction of homes and businesses from West Texas to Houston.

The National Weather Service issued storm warnings for Texas and parts of Oklahoma, accurately predicting the severe weather conditions. Reports of tornadoes, wind damage, and hail have been widespread, with a tornado sighted north and west of the Texas panhandle.

As the storms continue to ravage the state, power outages have affected nearly 500,000 residents in areas such as Dallas, Houston, and South Texas. The relentless heat exacerbates the situation, underscoring the urgent need to restore electricity to affected areas.

Live radar images show ongoing thunderstorms in central Texas, with more severe weather expected in the Houston area. While the severe storm threat has slightly diminished compared to previous days, the risk of strong storms persists, particularly in the afternoon.

Looking ahead, a new storm system originating from the Rockies is forecasted to impact the high plains, potentially bringing more severe weather. Heavy rain and flooding remain significant concerns for regions including Dallas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Louisiana, which have been grappling with severe storms for weeks.

Meanwhile, Florida is experiencing scorching temperatures, with record highs expected today. The combination of high temperatures and humidity has created oppressive conditions, with temperatures soaring into the 90s and heat indices surpassing 100 degrees.

While the focus has been on the severe weather in Texas, the extreme heat in Florida is also a noteworthy development. The unique humidity levels in the state have intensified the heatwave, setting the stage for potentially record-breaking temperatures.
