50 new Derry homes planned at former bakery site

Plans have been submitted to build 51 properties on a former bakery site in Co Derry.

Z Property Development has applied to build the homes on an 8.7-acre site at Woodside Road in Newbuildings

A number of properties have already been constructed on the location in recent months. The application had previously been approved but due to an amendment to part of the site, a new application was required for consideration by Derry City and Strabane District Council members.

It's understood the applicant is now seeking approval to change the house type and the use of open space at the site.

IAWS, which is part of Swiss food company Arytza, previously operated an industrial bakery which is around three miles from Derry city centre.

In a statement, the agent, Somerville Consulting, said: "This application, if approved, will complete the changes required to the previously approved house types.

"The new landowner of the site and applicant has undertaken considerable research as to the housing demand and requirements of likely purchases, hence the necessity to change the house types.

"Phase 1 of this process was approved in June of this year. It would be somewhat illogical not to approve this second phase when the house types were previously accepted and the number of units in this phase are unchanged at 51.

"There is a minor modification to the location of the open space but this is fully explained in the Supporting Planning Statement and indeed there is an increase in the amount of open space to be provided."
