With the controversial news Bounty chocolates have been excluded from a new limited edition Celebrations tin, we’ve taken a look back at the long list of chocolates that used to be in festive boxes and tins.
Quality Street, Celebrations, Heroes and Roses have seen many chocolate flavours come and go over the years. Some you may have been happy to see the back of them, groaning every time you pulled one out of the tin, but others you’ll miss dearly.
As for the Bounty, although some people do detest them, others find the chocolate delicious. Since the controversial news of limited edition Celebrations tins not containing the coconut sweet treat, many people have taken to Facebook pages across our regional news titles to share their thoughts on the decision.
Lorraine was devastated by the news, writing: "No you can’t do that. I at least know there is going to be something left after my kids have raided them. I love Bounty." Christine, however, is made up about the announcement. She said: "At last! They are bloomin' awful and never get eaten in our house."
There's often a yearly Christmas debate about which chocolates from festive tins are the best and worst. There are more than 50 chocolates that once had a place in the iconic boxes, but how many can you remember?
Celebrations
It’s only right we start with Celebrations following this week’s news that Bounty will not feature in a limited edition tin that’s to go on sale in select stores across the UK. Sorry, Bounty lovers!
Founded in 1997, Celebrations comprises miniature versions of the chocolate brands owned by manufacturer Mars. The Celebrations tin is set to include Maltesers Teaser, Mars, Milky Way, Snickers, Galaxy, Galaxy Caramel and Twix. The latter was previously removed from the selection, but reappeared in 2011.
There are three chocolates that Celebrations have lost over the years. They are:
Topic (removed in 2006)
Galaxy Truffle (removed in 2011)
Bounty (removed in limited edition tins in 2022)
Quality Street
The colourfully wrapped Quality Street chocolates have been bringing joy to many since the tin was founded in 1936. Since the chocolates have been around for over 80 years, it’s no surprise that many chocolates have been lost forever.
Some of the treats have been adapted to change the flavour. The chocolates completely lost or adapted include:
Purple One (the original Purple One with Brazil nut was replaced with a hazelnut version)
Chocolate Strawberry Cream (replaced by Strawberry Delight)
Chocolate Toffee Cup (replaced by Caramel Swirl)
Hazelnut Cracknell
Hazelnut Eclair
Honeycomb crunch (discontinued in 2018 to re-introduce Toffee Deluxe)
Chocolate Nut Toffee Cream
Malt Toffee (replaced by Toffee Deluxe as a "new" flavour)
Milk Chocolate Round (replaced by Milk Choc Block in green wrapper)
Peanut Cracknell
Almond Octagon (replaced by Vanilla Octagon which was later discontinued)
Gooseberry Cream
Fig Fancy
Apricot Delight
Toffee Square
Chocolate Truffle
Montelimar Nougat
Harrogate Toffee
Fruits of the Forest Creme
Smarties (cardboard box of Smarties, a 2004 promotion only)
Coffee Cream
Mint Fondant
Toffee Deluxe (replaced by Honeycomb Crunch, reintroduced and then replaced by Chocolate Caramel Brownie)
Crispy Truffle Bite (John Lewis stores only)
Roses
The other 'original' festive chocolate tin was Roses which launched in 1938 two years after Quality Street. It currently comprises Golden Barrel, Caramel, Country Fudge, Hazel in Caramel, Hazel Whirl, Strawberry Dream, Tangy Orange Creme, Signature Truffle and Cadbury Dairy Milk.
Like with Quality Street, Roses have been around for so long that many chocolate flavours have disappeared over the years. They are:
Brazilian Darkness
Praline Moment
Chunky Truffle
Bournville (moved to Heroes)
Almond Charm
Coffee Creme
Montelimar
Marzipan
Turkish Delight
Nutty Truffle Log
Orange Crisp
Chocolate Bite
Noisette Whirl
Lime Barrel
Black Cherry Cream
Caramel Velvet
Almond Caramel Bite
Heroes
The latest festive chocolate tin to join the crew was Heroes in 1999. It comprises mini versions of Cadburys chocolate bars, and currently contains Fudge, Dairy Milk Caramel, Dairy Milk, Wispa, Twirl, Creme Egg Twisted, Double Decker and Crunchie.
Despite only being around for little over two decades, some chocolates have been lost forever. They are:
Bournville (added in 2008, removed in 2013)
Dairy Milk Whole Nut (added in 2002, removed in 2008)
Dream (removed in 2008)
Fuse (removed in mid-2000s)
Picnic (removed in 2007)
Time Out (removed in 2007)
Toblerone (added for Christmas 2013, 2014 and 2015)
Nuts About Caramel (removed in mid-2000s)
