Over the weekend, a demonstration outside the Art Institute of Chicago led to the arrest of around 50 individuals, as reported by the institute. The protest, which began in the North Garden of the museum on Saturday morning, involved a group that included students from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
According to a spokesperson from the institute, the situation escalated when protesters allegedly shoved a security officer, took their keys to the museum, blocked emergency exits, and barricaded gates. Despite attempts by officers to offer an alternative location for the demonstration, the group declined the offer. Negotiations ensued, with promises of amnesty from academic sanctions and trespassing charges if the protesters agreed to relocate, but an agreement was not reached after approximately five hours of discussions.
Ultimately, the Chicago Police made the decision to disperse the protest in what was deemed the safest manner possible. Subsequently, approximately 50 individuals were arrested in connection with the demonstration, as confirmed by the institute's spokesperson.
