5 times Glaswegians have spotted ghosts as city among 'most haunted in the UK'

Glasgow has been named one of the most 'haunted' places in the UK, with the city coming in second place after London.

And if you think that you live with a ghost, you are not alone with one in five people thinking that they live with a spirit. It comes after a nationwide poll with a staggering 20 per cent of people who live in Glasgow insisting their home has a presence with the national average of people who live with a ghost, or spirit, standing at 17 per cent.

The survey - commissioned by Netflix and conducted by Perspectus Global last month 202 - found 56 per cent of those with a haunted house say it is a "friendly presence". However, one fifth (20 per cent) of people are convinced it is not quite as friendly as Casper the ghost.

But where across Glasgow have they been spotted? Here are five times locals have spotted some unusual activity.

1. Rutherglen's haunted house

On Monday August 8 back in 2016, police officers were called to a property on Stonelaw Road after a mother and her teenage son endured two days of paranormal activity in their home.

The stunned police witnessed bizarre occurrences, from clothes flying across the room, lights going on and off, oven doors opening and closing and lampshades mysteriously turned upside down.

And as if this was not scary enough, their pet dog ended up on top of a seven-foot hedge whilst playing in the garden.

The family were quick to move out of the eerie property in the Lanarkshire town and soon moved in with relatives before contacting the police to report 'disturbing incidents'.

A police source told the Daily Record at the time: “These were incidents that were witnessed by our own officers. Incidents that are not easily explained. But officers with more than 20 years of service are saying they’ve never seen anything like this. It really is something that down-to-earth police officers are having trouble getting their heads round.

“How do you handle what, despite us liking to use the word, has been described as a poltergeist.”

The woman and her son were both devout Catholics and police contacted the Church for help following the incident, with a Priest attending the house to perform a blessing in a bid to cleanse the property.

An inquiry was launched, with police assessing the history of the home and tracking down previous owners of the property to see if any similar incidents were reported.

A spokesman for Police Scotland told the Record at the time: “On 8 and 9 August police attended a house in Rutherglen to reports of a disturbance. No evidence of criminality was found and advice and guidance was given to the family.”

2. The man on Dalmarnock Bridge

In another area close to Rutherglen, the famous Dalmarnock Bridge is said to be haunted with locals reportedly seeing a young man staring over the side of the bridge before jumping and vanishing.

The identify of the man is unknown and nobody knows why people see this figure, however he had been said to look like a man in his 30s who is dressed all in black.

3. Pollok mum's haunted house

A young mum living in Pollok said she is living in fear from a ghost that haunts her home claiming she regularly hears bumps in the night, her baby gate creaking, taps being turned on and someone playing her kids' toys while they are asleep.

Not only that, but the Glasgow mum is said to have seen a ghostly shadow and her three-year-old daughter has nightmares after seeing "monsters" in her bedroom, with the situation getting so bad that she considering asking a priest or a psychic medium for help.

In an interview in May of last year, she told Glasgow Live: "It's always when my oldest is home and in bed. It's been happening for a few months now, different things happening each time. It started happening a few months back, with the tap in the kitchen turning on or the fridge door open, or hearing things at night.

"I heard the creak from the baby gate a few times but looked at the monitor and the wee one was sleeping. My ex-partner was in the house at the time it happened and I jumped out the bed to see to my wee girl because I heard the gate, but she was sound asleep in her room.

"Another time I walked past my living room to go to the kitchen at night and saw a shadow at the corner of my eye going into my bedroom.

"Then things started happening. I would hear noises on the baby monitor and keep looking at it, but my daughter wasn't moving at all and you could hear movement in her room.

"It gives me the fear. The most recent (thing which happened) was, the wee one's toy being played with - it doesn't take batteries."

Giving more examples of what goes on in her home, she said she "never speaks about ghosts or monsters" to her wee one as it "creeps" her out to the point she no longer wants to live there.

George the Medium, an 'astrologist and psychic' based in Gordon Street, gave his thoughts on the activity, and even offered to visit the family free of charge to help them.

4. The girl at Glasgow Central Station

In January 2009, there was a report of a young girl at the Arches, below Glasgow Central Station.

It was said that in the 1990s, a basement in Midland Street became home to the Alien Wars experience which transformed a network of tunnels into a battleground for marines and Aliens from the hit run of movies, which originally starred Sigourney Weaver.

People queued for hours to get into the annual event, which began in Glasgow and went on to tour the UK regularly. Reported in the press, the Alien Wars show was home to a phantom little girl dressed in old style clothing. While actors from the show were said to be afraid of the ghost, the phantom herself was reputedly frightened off by the show's special effects.

5. Scotland Street School

The Charles Rennie Mackintosh building was built between 1903 and 1906, and is now used as a museum.

However many locals have said that they have seen regular sightings of ghostly figures on the first and third floors. It isn't just sightings but people have also claimed that they hear things too with the occasional laughter, voices and footsteps - even when the museum is closed.

Objects have been known to move on their own, and people are convinced its another haunted area in Glasgow.
