5 things we spotted at Celtic training as Jota cracks up and Nir Bitton returns

Celtic were hard at work at Lennoxtown on Thursday as they gear up for the Scottish Cup clash with Alloa.

The Premier Sports Cup winners are looking to keep their domestic treble hopes alive when they face old foe Barry Ferguson on Saturday.

Having beaten Hibs 2-0 on their return from the winter break confidence will be high in the camp, even if key man Kyogo Furuhashi is still not involved.

Manager Ange Postecoglou put his players through their paces on a bright but cold morning as the club prepare to announce Matt O'Riley as his latest recruit.

Here are five things we noticed as Celtic got down to work.

Bitton's back

He hasn't played since the St Johnstone game before the winter break but Nir Bitton was training with the group on Thursday.

The Israeli international wasn't in the squad for the Hibs game as the Premiership returned but seemed to have no issues as he warmed up on a chilly Lennoxtown day.

Bitton has often been used off the bench so far this season, making just eight Premiership starts.

With a hectic run of games coming up though and the potential of losing a number of players to international duty his return is a welcome boost for Postecoglou.

No stress for Jota

The future of loan star Jota is still up in the air despite hopes that Celtic would activate their option to sign him this month.

As part of the deal which took him to Parkhead from Benfica the Glasgow giants can pay a fee of around £6m to sign the winger outright.

However, reports coming out of Portugal state that his parent club are hopeful he will return to Lisbon in the summer.

If that choice is weighing on his mind Jota didn't show it as he shared a joke with Ismaila Soro.

The 23-year-old made his return off the bench on Monday and will be hoping for a start in the Scottish Cup.

Guchi's fashion statement

It was a chilly old say in the west of Scotland and long sleeves were the order of the day as Postecoglou put his players through their paces.

New signings Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate didn't seem too bothered by it though as both went without gloves for the session.

The same cannot be said of fellow Japanese recruit Yosuke Ideguchi though who was clearly feeling the chill.

The midfielder has previous experience of British climes after his spell with Leeds United but still had to don gloves a woolly hat for the workout.

His fellow January recruits started against Hibs while Ideguchi had to be content with coming off the bench - will he make his first start against Alloa?

Hatate heats up

If Reo Hatate wasn't feeling the cold like his midfield colleague it might have something to do with his bouncing barnet.

The new man contented himself with a training top and no gloves as he geared up for his second game.

Daizen Maeda might have got a goal against Hibs but it was Hatate who really caught the eye of fans and media alike.

His range of passing set the tempo in the 2-0 win and earned an early comparison to Shunsuke Nakamura which Postecoglou was keen to play down.

Hatate was even awarded man of the match - though he didn't realise until it was explained to him by James Forrest.

Forrest tests his touch

It's been a frustrating couple of seasons for James Forrest.

The Scotland international missed most of the doomed 10 In A Row campaign with an ankle problem and a series of niggling muscle injuries have limited his impact under Postecoglou.

For a player used to playing 50 matches a season or more it can't have been easy to make just 32 in the space of 18 months.

On Thursday though Forrest appeared happy and relaxed as he went through the drills, showing off his first touch in one exercise.

A modern day Celtic legend, if he can stay fit for the second half of the campaign he'll be yet another asset in the title race.

The manager is well aware of his qualities and has been willing to wait for Forrest to get back to his best.

Postecoglou said last year: "I have been patient with him to get his body right because I knew once he was fit, he is a quality player, an experienced player, a national team player.

"I know the way we play will suit him."
