5 takeaways from this year’s Emmy nominations, including a possible Succession sweep

The 2023 Emmy nominations saw their announcement on Wednesday morning, as a host of television programs will now vie for the gold.

Hit series like Succession, The White Lotus, Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Ted Lasso, Barry, The Last of Us, Andor and Only Murders in the Building will contend for this year’s Emmy slate.

It’s not easy to know exactly how every single category will go once the shot airs in September, but we do have some takeaways as to how this round of Emmy nominations went.

Spoiler: we’re expecting a lot of Succession awards. Let’s take a look at five takeaways from Wednesday’s Emmy nominations.

Succession could sweep all of the major Drama categories

With its critically adored final season, HBO’s blockbuster drama Succession looks positioned to make a major impact at this year’s Emmys.

Right now, it looks like Succession could sweep all of the main categories in the Drama category, including Outstanding Drama Series, Lead Actor, Lead Actress, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress.

While the first four categories feel like locks, the strong showing for fellow HBO series The White Lotus in Supporting Actress could give that show a victory in that category.

All the same, expect plenty of Succession love come Emmy night.

It'll be Abbott Elementary vs. The Bear in Outstanding Comedy Series

If you want to know how Outstanding Comedy Series will go, you can either look at an elementary school or a Chicago sandwich shop.

ABC’s sitcom Abbott Elementary has a great chance to win its first Emmy in this category after two-time winner Ted Lasso disappointed with its final season.

However, FX’s smash-hit The Bear was eligible for the first time this Emmy voting period and will give Abbott Elementary a major challenge.

Star Wars continues to have a presence at the Emmys

As Disney/Lucasfilm continues to give Star Wars a strong presence on Disney+, the awards love keeps coming for the franchise.

The beloved prequel series Andor got nominated in the Drama Series category, while last summer’s limited series Obi-Wan Kenobi was a surprise in the Limited or Anthology Series category. The Mandalorian had popped up Drama Series in the past.

Even if Star Wars is continuing its gap from theaters, it’s making major waves at the Emmys as the franchise continues its streaming efforts.

Harrison Ford's Shrinking snub was the biggest shock

After being tipped as a heavy favorite to win the Emmys’ Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series category, veteran actor Harrison Ford found himself on the outside looking in on Wednesday.

While his Shrinking co-stars Jason Segel and Jessica Williams earned Emmy nominations, Ford’s performance as a therapist on the Apple TV+ series didn’t make the cut for a true shock in such a crowded field.

The television voting body can make weird decisions when big movie stars take on small-screen projects like this, so consider that a possible reason as to why Ford didn’t hear his name called.

Other Emmy snubs naturally filtered in for nomination morning.

Phil Dunster finally got Emmy love for Ted Lasso

After watching his co-stars rake in the Emmy love for the past few years, Ted Lasso‘s Jamie Tartt finally got his awards recognition.

Actor Phil Dunster landed his first Emmy nomination for the show’s seemingly final season after landing raves for his performance this spring.

Only Dunster and co-star Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent) landed nominations in this category after dominating the last two years.
