6 signs Taylor Swift might announce 1989 (Taylor’s Version) at her Aug. 9 Eras Tour stop

The first leg of Taylor Swift’s U.S. tour is coming to a close tonight as she performs her sixth and final Eras Tour show at SoFi Stadium. Given Swift’s reputation for fan service, she won’t leave without dropping a few big surprises and many Swifties are convinced one of them will be the official release date of 1989 (Taylor’s Version).

Swift, who’s been in the process of re-recording several of her albums after losing ownership of the master recordings, is the master of leaving a trail of cryptic clues through colors, numbers and hidden messages. Here are six reasons why we’re convinced tonight is the night for 1989 (Taylor’s Version).

What is the calendar date for this final Los Angeles show? August 9, which shortens to 8/9. 89. 1989. It’s all right there.

The original 1989 release date

Taylor Swift first released 1989 on Oct. 27, 2014. The amount of time passed between October 27, 2014 and Aug. 9, 2023 comes out to 3,208 days or 8 years, 9 months and 13 days.

8. 9. 13. The last two digits of 1989 plus Taylor Swift’s favorite number of 13.

Incredible wizardry.

Tuesday night’s show saw Swift breaking out a new bodysuit for the Midnights portion of the Eras Tour. Immediately fans noticed that it resembled a bodysuit worn back during the 1989 Tour.

Blue lights

Sandy Hooper-USA TODAY ORG XMIT:

The evening before Taylor announced her Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) release, the light-up wristbands given out to fans blinked purple to end the show. Purple is the color mostly associated with that particular album in Taylor Swift lore.

At Tuesday night’s Los Angeles show, the bracelets blinked blue. The color most associated with 1989? You guessed it. Blue.

Surprise songs remaining

Each night on tour, Taylor Swift plays 45 songs from her extensive catalog of hits. This includes two surprise songs, which vary city to city and include one acoustic version played on guitar and one on piano. There have been a few surprise songs repeated, but there remains just one song from 1989 that hasn’t been played yet: “New Romantics.”

Could she finish out that album with the 1989 (Taylor’s Version) announcement?

Video easter eggs

Sandy Hooper-USA TODAY

This one could be construed in a few ways, and there is some debate among the fanbase as to what this moment is actually hinting toward. At the end of the music video for “I Can See You (Taylor’s Version)” from the newly re-released Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) album, Taylor gets into a van that drives over a bridge with a road sign that reads “1989 TV.”

Now, you might think this is a pretty clear cut sign that it’s for 1989 (Taylor’s Version), but some fans are hypothesizing that they’re in a getaway car. Since “Getaway Car” is the name of a song on the Reputation album, there are a group of fans that think Reputation (Taylor’s Version) will be next.

Maybe we find out Wednesday night.
