We are eight games into the 2023 season. Once upon a time, this would have been the halfway mark, giving us a strong sample size as to what pace each player is on.
When you look at the numbers for some of the Raiders players on offense, you can see why the team moved on from their supposed offensive guru head coach Josh McDaniels.
QB Jimmy Garoppolo
On pace for: 3137 yards, 18 TD, 23 INT
At this point, Garoppolo’s “on pace for” is probably closer to his current total considering he was benched. But this is for comparison purposes, so bear with me on this.
There has been exactly one QB in the past decade to throw as many or more than 23 interceptions. That was Jameis Winston who threw 30 INT in 2019.
Since Garoppolo has missed two games, this is a 15-game total. Twice before in Garoppolo’s career, he played at least 15 games in a season. This would have been his worst numbers across the board. For good measure, these would also have been the worst numbers across the board of Derek Carr’s career. That includes his rookie season.
RB Josh Jacobs
On pace for: 867 yards, 6 TD
These would be career lows in both yards and touchdowns. Not surprising then that his 3.1 yards per carry is also a career low. This from the league’s reigning rushing champ. When compared to last season’s totals, 867 yards wouldn’t even be good enough to land him inside the top 20.
WR Davante Adams
On pace for: 100 rec, 1145 yds, 6 TD
These may seem like they’re still pretty good numbers. But not for Adams. The last full season Adams had with fewer catches, yards, or TD’s than this was 2017. And if he continued with his average over the past four games, he would finish with just 79 catches for 859 yards and 3 TDs which would be a career worst when starting at least 13 games.
WR Hunter Renfrow
On pace for: 21 rec, 195 yds, 0 TD
All would be career lows. And that includes last season when he missed seven games. This for a guy who the season before McDaniels took over as head coach entered the Raiders record books and went to the Pro Bowl with 103 catches for 1038 yards and nine touchdowns. He’s been healthy all of this season.
TE Austin Hooper
On pace for: 26 rec, 250 yds, 0 TD
This would be a career low in yards and TD’s for Hooper. And his fewest catches since his rookie year.
WR DeAndre Carter
On pace for: 4 rec, 45 yds, 0 TD
Carter has just two catches this season. After coming off a career year with the Chargers in which he caught 46 passes for 538 yards and 3 TDs. Only once in Carter’s six NFL seasons has he had fewer catches and yards than he is on pace for this season.
TE Michael Mayer
On pace for: 23 rec, 314 yds, 0 TD
Mayer has the worst numbers of any of the top four tight ends in this year’s draft. Sam LaPorta — who was drafted with the pick right before Mayer — currently has 43 rec, 434 yds, 4 TD’s
WR Jakobi Meyers
On pace for: 86 rec, 923 yds, 11 TD
I saved Meyers for last for those wondering where all the targets could be going. Meyers is the outlier here as he is on pace for career highs across the board. Good for him. Not so much for the rest of the team.
