5 of the best patisseries in Paris

Celebrating my birthday in Paris felt like a dream. Before heading to my easyJet flight, I scoured the internet to search for the best bakeries and cafés in Paris. That involved scrolling through Instagram and watching numerous TikTok videos hyping up a string of spots all over Paris.

With the rising popularity of café and bakery culture, and considering the French reputation for pastry mastery, my expectations were high — and they didn’t fall short of my (fussy) expectations.

The French Bastards

The French Bastards debuted its bakery in January 2019 at 61 rue Oberkampf, in the 11th arrondissement. I instantly set my eyes on the classic croissant, which was wonderfully soft and moist. It didn't have that stale taste like it had been sitting out since dawn, and it was pleasantly light to hold. While the location I visited didn't offer indoor seating, I was planning to spend the day sightseeing anyway, so I happily munched on it as I snapped the city.

Telescope

Nestled in the city's Japanese quarter is Telescope, where culinary design merges with café culture. This bakery embodies a blend of chic, contemporary, and traditional elements. I'm sure you agree — it's frustrating when something looks pleasing to the eye but tastes mediocre. However, Telescope's chocolate chip cookies didn't leave me disappointed. It was crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, and just the right amount of sweetness, allowing the rich chocolate flavour to shine through.

KB

For all the coffee enthusiasts out there, KB roast their own coffee beans, and the aroma fills your nostrils before you even step through the doors. Despite having a modest bakery selection, I decided to try their scone. I was craving something light and fluffy, and it didn't disappoint. If you've ever had a bad experience with hard, dry scones that almost put you off them for life, KB's scones will restore your faith.

Copains

Copains means "friends" in English, and as soon as I walked in, one of the assistants walked me through their range and effortlessly listed the ingredients without needing a menu. They really know their stuff, so if you have a set of fussy tastebuds, I'd trust their recommendations. After some quick desktop research, I found out that the founders have worked in fashion houses like Louis Vuitton, and you can see their attention to detail in the pastries. I opted for the cinnamon roll, perfect for any cinnamon lover.

Bopain

For chocolate and croissant lovers, the pain au chocolat is an obvious choice. The pastry was warm when I got it, so I lucked out with the timing. It was moist and rich in all the right ways. The selection of pastries is beautifully crafted and delicately decorated. If you appreciate pastry mastery, you'll probably feel inspired to get into the kitchen and experiment with your own designs.
