5 indicted in investigation of guns smuggled from South to NYC

NEW YORK — Five people have been indicted for running guns from Tennessee to New York City, the Queens district attorney’s office said Thursday.

The details of the probe will be laid out in an afternoon news conference by DA Melinda Katz and NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell.

The DA’s office said the 1,611-count indictment of the suspects is a result of law enforcement’s efforts “to break the notorious ‘Iron Pipeline’ used to smuggle guns purchased down south to be sold illegally in New York.”

Nearly 200 guns were seized during the investigation, which started almost a year ago, according to a police source.

Tennessee does not often come up in Iron Pipeline investigations of guns trafficked to New York.

In 2020, according to a report from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, 101 firearms recovered in the Empire State came from Tennessee, 11th on the list.

Most of the 7,254 guns recovered that year — 910 — were sold in New York, followed by Georgia with 632, Virginia with 491, and South Carolina with 427.
