The Kansas City Chiefs have a wide receiver problem.
After wideout Marquez Valdes-Scantling dropped a game-winning touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night, it underscored how the best quarterback in the game doesn’t really have the help he deserves from his wide receiver group.
However, there are some legitimate options out in free agency right now if the team wanted to bring in a veteran and see if they could help, at least just a little bit. Right now, any positive momentum for Kansas City would be good.
The available names might not be superstars, but they could all possibly help Mahomes in some way. Let’s see who they are and how they’d factor in.
WR Jarvis Landry
Landry is probably the most intriguing option on this list, as he’s been historically a premiere talent at the position and is only 30.
He had some injury struggles with the New Orleans Saints last year, but he could be an excellent practice squad candidate who could help Mahomes attack the middle of the field with a bit more confidence than he’s had.
WR T.Y. Hilton
Hilton spent most all of his career with the Indianapolis Colts as an explosive top receiver, but he played for the Dallas Cowboys in three games last year to help that team’s playoff push in the NFC.
The 34-year-old veteran could sign with Kansas City’s practice squad and give them a field-stretching option to help hit some of these longer passes when he’s elevated. He’s probably the player on this list with the highest ceiling to make big plays in games, while Landry is likely the safest bet.
WR Sammy Watkins
If the Chiefs want a friendly face who has played with Mahomes before, then Watkins would be an excellent fit for veterah depth.
He played with Mahomes in his first three years in Kansas City and helped the team win a Super Bowl in 2020. He’d have an established rapport with the Chiefs quarterback and could give the team another option at wideout.
WR Cam Sims
If the Chiefs want someone who could also help out on special teams, Sims would be your guy. He got his start with the Washington Commanders and hauled in 477 yards in his third season in the NFL.
He might not give you the name power of someone like Landry, Hilton or Watkins, but he’s the kind of low-risk, high-reward move that it wouldn’t hurt to make this time of year for a practice squad addition you elevate when needed.
WR Rashard Higgins
Higgins hasn’t gotten meaningful time on the field since 2021 after an uneventful year with the Carolina Panthers, but he’s been productive in the past while he was with the Cleveland Browns.
He had nearly 600 yards and four touchdowns with Cleveland in 2020, and it’d be interesting to see if he’s able to recapture any of that production if he got with a phenomenal quarterback like Mahomes.
Again, options are slim right now, but Higgins intrigues as much as anyone.
