Nowadays, it feels like the filmmakers are just edging us — I’m talking to you, Don’t Worry Darling. (Although Saltburn did come close with that bathtub scene, iykyk.)

Before we even get into the best movies, what actually is an erotic thriller? According to film study professor Linda Ruth Williams, “Erotic thrillers are noirish stories of sexual intrigue incorporating some form of criminality or duplicity, often as the flimsy framework for onscreen softcore sex.”

5. Eyes Wide Shut: 1999
If you have a mask kink, then this movie is for you. Eyes Wide Shut follows Alice Harford (played by Aussie Nicole Kidman) and her doctor husband Bill Harford (AKA Tom Cruise.)
Alice confesses to Bill that she has fantasised about a man who isn’t him, gasp. So, what does Bill do to inflate his ego back up? Join a sex cult, of course — which is where the masks come in. The only problem? He can’t seem to leave. Dun, dun, dunnnn.
4. Bound: 1996
Bound follows Violet (Jennifer Tilly), who longs to escape her gangster boyfriend, Caeser (Joe Pantoliano.) Enter stage right, Violet’s knight in shining armour/ex-con who moved in next door, Corky (Gina Gershon.)
Violet and Corky become lovers and plan to run away together by stealing two million (sheesh) of the mob’s money and blaming it on Caeser. Will they make it out alive? Or will they become the modern-day Bonnie and Clyde?
3. The Last Seduction: 1994
The Last Seduction follows Bridget Gregory (Linda Fiorentino) as she convinces her husband, Clay Gregory (Bill Pullman), to sell cocaine. Bridget leaves town with Clay’s drug money and plans to put it towards a hitman business.
Violet’s target market will be wives who have been cheated on, and she can get rid of their husbands — for a price. Will she escape her own husband, his detective and the drug cartel? Let’s just say you’ll find out why she’s been dubbed a maneater.
2. Cruel Intentions: 1999
Cruel Intentions follows wealthy teenager Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Phillippe) and his step-sister Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar.) They really are cruel, as the duo makes a bet on the headmaster’s virgin daughter, Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon.)
If Sebastian steals Annette’s virginity, he gets to sleep with Kathryn (his step-sister!!) If he doesn’t, Kathryn will get his vintage Jaguar XK140 — just rich people things.
1. Single White Female: 1992
Single White Female follows Allison Jones (Bridget Fonda) as she discovers her husband Sam Rawson (Steven Weber) is having an affair with his ex-wife. She kicks him out (go girl) and finds a new roommate, Hedra Carlson (Jennifer Jason Leigh.)
What starts as harmless friends becomes something else when “Allie” notices how possessive “Hedy” is becoming. Will Allie escape in time? Or will she be stuck in the apartment with Hedy forever?
