The 49ers don’t have a quarterback shortage on their roster, but they could still run into a QB availability problem when rookie minicamp kicks off in mid-May.
San Francisco has four QBs on their roster with Trey Lance, Brock Purdy, Sam Darnold and to-be-signed veteran Brandon Allen. While that quartet should be fine for the 49ers in OTAs and training camp, it won’t do them any good in rookie minicamp since none of them are eligible to participate.
The only players allowed to take part in rookie minicamp are drafted rookies, undrafted rookies, players participating on a tryout basis, and veterans on futures contracts who haven’t accrued an NFL season. None of the 49ers’ four QBs fit that bill.
It’s likely the solution for San Francisco, as pointed out by Matt Barrows of the Athletic, is for a QB or two to come in as a “tryout” to fit them under the eligibility criteria.
While the QB situation is the biggest storyline for the 49ers during the offseason and training camp, the foundations for that battle will need to wait until after rookie minicamps to be built.
