The 49ers on Wednesday announced the initial jersey numbers for their veteran additions from the offseason.
They brought in nine new players who were all assigned numbers prior to the arrival of the team’s rookies for rookie minicamp, which begins Friday. Matt Barrows of the Athletic compiled the list of new numbers:
WR Ray-Ray McCloud, 3
WR KeeSean Johnson, 13
S George Odum, 30
CB Darqueze Dennard, 31
CB Charvarius Ward, 35
LB Oren Burks, 48
DE Kemoko Turay, 53
DE Kerry Hyder, 92
DT Hassan Ridgeway, 98
Ward, the team’s biggest offseason signing, will remain in the No. 35 he wore during his tenure with the Chiefs. Three players wore that number for the 49ers last year, including running backs Brian Hill and Jacques Patrick, and safety Tony Jefferson.
McCloud for his career wore No. 14 with Buffalo, Carolina and Pittsburgh. He’ll make the switch to the single-digit 3 that Jaquiski Tartt wore last year.
Dennard will opt for a new number after wearing 43 in his brief appearance for San Francisco in 2022. Hyder, on the other hand, will go back to the No. 92 he sported for the 49ers when he led the team in sacks during the 2020 campaign.
Two players, Odum and Burks, will contribute big-time on special teams. Odum opted to stick with the No. 30 he wore during his four seasons with the Colts. Burks might’ve wanted to stick with No. 42, but the 49ers retired that number for Ronnie Lott, so he moved to 48.
Turay wore 57 while he was with the Colts. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw wears that for the 49ers, so Turay will take No. 51 instead.
Ridgeway was No. 98 during his three years with the Eagles and will stick with that in red and gold. Johnson was No. 19 with the Cardinals and 17 with the Eagles. Now he’ll rock No. 13 with the 49ers.
