The NFL announced the full list of compensatory draft picks on Thursday as teams continue their preparations and evaluations ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft.
A total of 37 comp picks were distributed across 16 teams, adding more clarity to the draft order for next month’s event, which is set to take place in Kansas City, Mo. from April 27 to April 29. Of the 16 teams, the 49ers led the way with seven selections followed by the Rams earning four selections, and the Cardinals, Cowboys and Chiefs each receiving three picks.
For nearly 30 years, NFL teams have received comp picks, ranging in Rounds 3 to 7, in an effort to balance the competition level, though the rules have been amended in recent years. According to the NFL, comp picks are given to teams who lose key free agents during the prior offseason and are “determined by a formula based on salary, playing time, and postseason honors.”
Since 2020, the NFL has also awarded five special selections at the end of the third round to teams with formerly-employed minority staff members who have been hired by another club as a head coach or primary football executive. This year, the Browns as well as San Francisco and Kansas City are the only teams who matched this criteria.
