The San Francisco 49ers announced running back Christian McCaffrey is out for their season opener against the New York Jets.
McCaffrey was listed as questionable with calf and Achilles injuries. The reigning Offensive Player of the Year expressed confidence he’d play against New York, but he was listed among their inactives for Week 1 after missing all of the preseason with the ailments.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the injuries aren’t new, and that McCaffrey has been battling them since Week 17 of last season.
Jordan Mason will get the start for San Francisco.
Here’s the full list of inactives:
QB Josh Dobbs
S Talanoa Hufanga (knee)
LB Dee Winters (ankle)
DL Yetur Gross-Matos (knee)
CB Darrell Luter Jr.
OL Ben Bartch
RB Christian McCaffrey
McCaffrey is the only real surprise among the inactives. Hufanga was listed as doubtful after getting limited practices all week. Gross-Matos and Winters were both ruled out Friday.
Left guard Aaron Banks will play after being listed as questionable with a finger injury.
Dobbs will be the emergency third QB.
