The 49ers’ injury woes subsided for a couple weeks, but came roaring back during their Week 13 victory over the Dolphins.
Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s broken foot that is likely to cost him the remainder of the 2022 campaign headlined a day full of various ailments that have the 49ers’ health in question going into a Week 14 showdown against the NFC South-leading Buccaneers.
Here’s what Wednesday’s practice participation report looked like:
Did not participate
DL Nick Bosa (hamstring)
QB Jimmy Garoppolo (foot)
DB Tarvarius Moore (knee)
DL Hassan Ridgeway (pectoral)
LT Trent Williams (not injury related – resting player)
Limited participation
DL Arik Armstead (foot, ankle)
OL Spencer Burford (ankle)
RB Christian McCaffrey (knee)
WR Deebo Samuel (quadricep)
Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday indicated the club would manage Bosa’s hamstring “irritation” throughout the week, which means he could follow the path McCaffrey took in Week 13 where he was a non-participant Wednesday, and then limited Thursday before practicing in full Friday. It may not go exactly that way, and if Bosa misses Thursday’s session it could be time to worry.
It’s also good news that Williams’ back wasn’t the reason he missed Wednesday. He had some back spasms during last Friday’s practice that led him to be listed as questionable on the injury report.
Shanahan also said the club would continue to manage McCaffrey’s knee “irritation,” along with Armstead to ensure the defensive lineman doesn’t have any setbacks in his return from foot and ankle injuries.
Samuel was questionable going into Sunday’s game with that quad injury, so it’s not a huge surprise he was limited to begin the week. It’ll be a good sign as long as there are no setbacks for the star wide receiver.
