49ers make wave of roster moves, officially sign DT Sebastian Joseph-Day

The 49ers on Wednesday announced a slew of roster moves as they maneuver to ensure their depth is in place with their injury problems stacking up.

They officially signed defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day, made some adjustments to their practice squad, and activated wide receiver Danny Gray off Injured Reserve.

Here’s a quick rundown of the moves they announced Wednesday:

Signed: DL Sebastian Joseph-Day

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

The Joseph-Day signing was first reported Tuesday. He figures to slide into either a starting spot or as a key member of the 49ers’ interior defensive line rotation with Arik Armstead still working through knee and foot injuries.

Signed: OL Matt Pryor

Sergio Estrada-USA TODAY Sports

Pryor was released ahead of Monday night’s game. He was re-signed as the injuries piled up for the 49ers on the offensive line during the loss to the Ravens. Pryor can play on the interior, but most of his work with the 49ers has been at right tackle where he may be needed if Trent Williams and Jaylon Moore are both out.

Waived: RB Jeremy McNichols

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

McNichols was promoted to the active roster ahead of Monday’s game and now he’s been waived to make room for Pryor. There’s a strong chance San Francisco brings him back on the practice squad, though the team expects RB Elijah Mitchell to be back for Week 17 which makes the need for RB depth less dire.

Signed: OL Sebastian Gutierrez (practice squad)

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Gutierrez has played in one game as a pro after joining the league as an undrafted rookie last year. He made his debut with the Raiders, but he’s been with the Raiders, Broncos, Patriots and Chiefs practice squads in his two seasons. The 6-6, 308-pound OL will add internal depth at tackle.

Signed: WR Willie Snead IV (practice squad)

Stan Szeto-USA TODAY Sports

The 49ers on Tuesday released Snead to make room for Joseph-Day. There was an expectation he’d be back on the practice squad where he was before being promoted to the active roster Monday.
