Everyone in the Rams’ building was hoping Aaron Donald would put off retirement and return for at least one more year this offseason. The same can’t be said about the team that resides some 340 miles north of the Rams’ headquarters.
49ers left tackle Trent Williams wishes Donald would’ve retired from the NFL and rode off into the sunset, never to have to face San Francisco’s offensive line again. Williams has a ton of respect for Donald, though, and knows he deserved the lucrative new contract he signed on Monday.
Trent Williams on Aaron Donald's new contract with the Rams: "Yeah, I wish he would've retired, but he deserved a new contract."

Being an interior defender, Donald doesn’t usually match up with Williams on the edge. He’s typically rushing against the guards and centers, but every now and then, the Rams line up Donald across from Williams in what’s a battle of two heavyweight fighters.
We’ll get to see these two players square off twice more in 2022 when the Rams and 49ers meet, with a potential third matchup coming in the playoffs like we had this past January.
