49ers, Jimmy Garoppolo agree to restructured one-year contract

In a turn of events, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will remain with the San Francisco 49ers — as Trey Lance’s backup, of course.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the 49ers and Garoppolo have agreed to a one-year restructured deal to keep him in San Francisco for the 2022 season. Garoppolo is now the highest-paid backup quarterback in the NFL.

Schefter adds that the contract has no-trade and no-tag clauses, which leaves Garoppolo free to explore opportunities elsewhere in 2023.

Garoppolo’s base salary has been lowered to $6.5 million fully guaranteed while allowing him an opportunity to make nearly $10 million extra in incentives if he starts, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Obviously, the hope is it doesn’t come to that for the 49ers, as the hope is Lance will develop into a franchise quarterback. It was made clear that this is Lance’s team moving forward. But it certainly helps having an experienced veteran in Garoppolo on the bench, if needed.
