49ers injury news: Who’s out for Week 15, and who could return?

The 49ers injury situation wasn’t great going into Week 14, and it didn’t improve much during their 28-16 win over the Seahawks.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday in a conference call expanded on the injury updates he had immediately following the game. The list of players banged up for San Francisco is long, and it doesn’t sound like there’s a ton of optimism that they’ll be anywhere close to full strength when they visit the Cardinals in Week 15.

Here’s a quick rundown of Shanahan’s updates:

DL Javon Hargrave (hamstring)

Hargrave exited Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury. Shanahan said there’s a chance Hargrave returns to practice late in the week, but the club would monitor his recovery. It wouldn’t be a huge surprise if the team gave him a week off to ensure his hamstring doesn’t become a lingering issue.

Ward is in the same boat as Hargrave, only he left Sunday’s game with a groin injury after two plays. That ailment could keep him out for Week 15.

LB Dre Greenlaw (hip, ankle)

The original postgame update from Shanahan on Greenlaw only identified the hip issue, which the LB returned from Sunday. Now he’s also dealing with an ankle injury and is considered day-to-day.

It’s unclear when Burks got banged up during the game. Shanahan classified the injury as tendinitis that will likely keep Burks out for a couple weeks.

DL Arik Armstead (foot, knee)

Armstead missed Sunday’s game with foot and knee issues. His status for Week 15 hasn’t changed much.  Shanahan said he will “likely in the same boat this week as last week.”

TE Ross Dwelley (ankle)

Dwelley suffered a high ankle sprain against the Eagles and missed Sunday’s game vs. Seattle. Shanahan just said “we’ll see how the week goes” in relation to the veteran TE’s status. Given that it’s a high ankle sprain it’s tough to believe he’d play jut two weeks later.

OL Spencer Burford (knee)

Shanahan is hopeful the team will get Burford back after he missed Week 14 with a different knee injury than the one that kept him out of Week 12.

There’s optimism that Luter, a rookie fifth-round pick and special teams contributor, will be able to suit up for practice again after sitting out Sunday.

RB Elijah Mitchell (knee)

Mitchell missed practice all of last week with what Shanahan called residual knee soreness from Week 13’s game in Philadelphia. Shanahan said he’s hopeful Mitchell will return this week.
