49ers Injuries: Brock Purdy, Nick Bosa Out Sunday Vs. Packers

The San Francisco 49ers will be shorthanded at two key positions in Week 12. Brock Purdy (shoulder) and Nick Bosa (rib/oblique) have been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Packers.

Purdy injured his right shoulder in the 49ers’ Week 11 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

The team diagnosed Purdy with shoulder soreness. The former Iowa State product was a limited participant in practice on Wednesday and Thursday before sitting out Friday.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan believed Purdy’s shoulder would hold up enough to play. However, the injury flared up during practice and ultimately led to the team ruling him out for Week 12.

“I don’t want to say there is long-term concern. We got the MRI on Monday, we really just thought he needed some rest,” said Shanahan said on Friday via 49ers.com. “We really weren’t concerned about him not being good this week, but when he started up Thursday, it surprised him, it surprised us how (his shoulder injury) felt. So, we had to shut him down. I really don’t know what to think of it. The MRI doesn’t look like that, so it should be all right. But, the way it responded, it really is up in the air for next week. We’ll have to see on Monday.”

Since becoming the starter at the end of the 2022 season, Purdy has only missed one start.

Purdy has thrown for 2,613 yards, 13 touchdowns, and eight interceptions through 10 games this year.

On the defensive side, Bosa’s absence for the upcoming game is less surprising. Bosa missed all three practices this week with a hip and oblique issue.

Brandon Allen Will Start At QB

With Purdy out, nine-year veteran Brandon Allen will start at quarterback, with Josh Dobbs as the backup.

Allen has made nine starts since entering the league in 2016. It’s his first start since the final week of the 2021 season.

Because Allen has been with the 49ers since 2023, Shanahan feels comfortable putting him out in a crucial game.

“I think Brandon’s a really good thrower, runs our offense well, has done a really good job since he’s been here,” Shanahan said. “Been here two years now, and guys believe in him and think he’ll give us a good chance to win.”

The 49ers (5-5) play the Packers (7-3) in Lambeau at 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday.
