49ers hold No. 1 seed in NFC after Eagles loss to Cowboys

The 49ers are now sitting atop the NFC thanks to the Eagles’ loss to the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football.

Philadelphia’s 33-13 loss in Dallas dropped them to 10-3 for the year, putting San Francisco in a three-way tie for the top spot in the conference.

Here’s what the NFC playoff picture looks like after Sunday Night Football:

1. 49ers (10-3)
2. Cowboys (10-3)

3. Lions (9-4)
4. Buccaneers (6-7)
5. Eagles (10-3)
6. Vikings (7-6)
7. Packers (6-6)

This is where the 49ers’ head-to-head tiebreakers over the Cowboys and Eagles are helpful. That gives them the top spot despite the three-way tie.

Dallas eclipsed the Eagles with the win as well. Since they split the season series, the tiebreak moves to division record where the Cowboys sit at 4-1 and Philadelphia is at 3-1.

Detroit losing to Chicaago on Sunday avoided a four-way tie at the top which would have negated the head-to-head tiebreak since the 49ers and Lions don’t play each other in 2023.

The job still isn’t done for the 49ers and their margin for error is now gone. However, if they win out they will be the No. 1 seed.
