49ers elevate QB Nate Sudfeld to active roster

In another move that points toward Jimmy Garoppolo not playing Sunday, the 49ers added quarterback Nate Sudfeld to the active roster as a COVID-19 replacement. Sudfeld will occupy the roster spot vacated by punter Mitch Wishnowsky, who’s on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

This is the third time this year Sudfeld has been elevated from the practice squad. The other two times were in Week 5 when Jimmy Garoppolo was hurt and Week 7 when Trey Lance was hurt.

Garoppolo this week is listed as ‘doubtful’ with a thumb injury. While head coach Kyle Shanahan is holding out hope that the starting QB will be ready for Sunday, all signs point to Lance starting with Sudfeld working as the QB2.
