As 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy fielded questions from reporters Thursday at the team’s facility in Santa Clara, Calif., one query stood out amongst the rest.
Purdy gave insightful answers about San Francisco’s preparation for its matchup against the Seahawks, and praised a few teammates and the 49ers’ fan base. But he also addressed a recent hot take by FOX Sports pundit Colin Cowherd.
“Brock, do you think you’re representing the organization well right now, standing up there on the podium wearing a backwards hat?” the reporter jokingly asked.
“Man, that’s just who I am,” Purdy said with a smile. “I think so.”

Cowherd has long stood by the take that franchise quarterbacks shouldn’t wear their hat backwards. He recently stated that Purdy isn’t an elite quarterback because he wears a backwards hat.
“Some guys have told me in the locker room and stuff,” Purdy said when asked if he knew what the question was referring to. “I don’t buy in all that stuff. I’m just trying to play quarterback and win games.”
Whatever Purdy is doing—with his hat backwards or forwards—it’s working. The second-year quarterback leads the NFL in passer rating (116.1) and average yards per completion (9.6), continuing his improbable rise from Mr. Irrelevant to the 49ers’ long-term answer under center.
