As the starting quarterback for the undefeated 49ers, Brock Purdy has all but distanced himself from the title of “Mr. Irrelevant.” But, as a former seventh-round pick, the second-year QB’s lifestyle has yet to catch up to his newfound fame.
Purdy, following a breakout rookie year, entered the 2023 season playing on a rookie-scale $870,000 salary, placing the ex-Iowa State standout in less-than-ideal financial situation living in San Francisco—the third-most expensive city in the United States.
In fact, Purdy’s finances are so tight that the 23-year-old shared a couple ways he’s tried to save money during a recent interview with NBC’s Today Show when asked what the reality is for him at home.
“So, I still have a roommate, one of my offensive lineman here,” Purdy admitted without sharing a name. “So, he and I are still splitting rent. I still drive my Toyota Sequoia and, other than that, it’s pretty simple.”
While Purdy’s predicament may seem like a plight to some in the NFL, the Niners signal-caller appears to be taking his living situation in stride. Of course, given how he’s played to this point, Purdy could also already be taking some solace in knowing that a big pay day could soon be on its way.
Until then, however, Purdy, in spite of his “simple” life, will continue to be the high-profile, underpaid leader of a 49ers team looking to go 5–0 with a Week 5 win over the Cowboys (3–1) on Sunday Night Football.
