To the surprise of absolutely nobody, the 49ers on Thursday announced the return of veteran cornerback Dontae Johnson on a one-year contract.
Johnson, 30, was a fourth-round pick of the 49ers in 2014 and since then has become an integral part of their secondary and special teams units.
Last season Johnson played in 16 games with three starts in a beat up 49ers secondary. In 2020 he played in 14 games with three starts. Despite signing with the Bills as a free agent in 2018, then making his way to the Chargers the following year, Johnson continues circling back to the 49ers where he’s a mainstay and a quality backup in a young secondary.
In his eight NFL seasons Johnson has 28 starts and 103 games played. He’s posted 214 tackles, 26 pass breakups and two interceptions.
