The 49ers’ blowout loss in the NFC championship game was catalyzed by an injury to quarterback Brock Purdy on San Francisco’s first possession. ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Sunday evening reported the 49ers believe Purdy suffered an injury to his ulnar collateral ligament. He will have an MRI on Monday.
Purdy on Sunday drove the 49ers to the 50 on their first possession. On a second-and-6, San Francisco tried some play action trickery. The result was Eagles defensive end Haason Reddick blowing past tight end Tyler Kroft and hitting Purdy’s arm as he threw. The play resulted in a fumble recovered by the Eagles.
The 49ers wound up reinserting Purdy into the game when his backup, Josh Johnson, suffered a concussion and was ruled out early in the third quarter. His limitations were clear though and he threw it only twice the rest of the way. Both throws were short screen passes.
Schefter reported the timeline for Purdy’s recovery would be six weeks if he avoided a UCL rupture. The timeline for his return if he did tear his UCL is unclear.
Once again the 49ers will enter an offseason with some uncertainty under center.
