49ers assistant general manger Adam Peters figures to be a hot candidate for general manager jobs again this hiring cycle, and the Washington Commanders wasted no time getting him in the building for an interview.
Per Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, Peters will interview with the Commanders to be their head of football operations on Tuesday in Miami.
Peters has been in the NFL for 21 years and joined San Francisco’s front office in 2017 where he took on a vice president of player personnel role before his promotion to assistant GM.
There have been plenty of opportunities for Peters to move on and take his first full-time job running a front office. Peters hasn’t taken any of those jobs yet and even turned down a couple interviews last season. However, with new Commanders owner Josh Harris and his team that includes former Golden State Warriors president of basketball operations Bob Myers making such an aggressive, early call, this could be the offseason that sees Peters leave to take the next step in his front office career.
It’s unclear what this means for current Commanders GM Martin Mayhew. In 2021 Mayhew was hired away from the 49ers’ front office to run things in Washington. Perhaps Peters would want to retain his former 49ers front-officemate, but he may also opt to clean house and make his own hires.
