48-hour curfew lifted from clash-hit area in Jalgaon

A 48-hour curfew imposed in Amalner in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district following a dispute between two communities was lifted on Monday.

On June 9 around 10 p.m., a heated argument between two groups over children’s toys took a violent turn with both sides pelting stones at each other.

30 arrested

At least 30 people were arrested and a curfew was imposed in the area on June 10 for 48 hours. Maharashtra has seen a spate of communal clashes in the recent past. On June 7, communal clashes erupted in Kolhapur following a social media post hailing Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and 18th century Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan. Forty people have been arrested and prohibitory orders are in place till June 19.

“Nobody was hurt in the Amalner incident but we imposed a curfew to ensure law and order is maintained in the area. It was imposed from 11 a.m. on June 10. The curfew has been lifted now and no incident of violence or disturbance was reported from the area,” a police official said.

The accused have been charged with relevant Sections, including Sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 298 (uttering words with deliberate intent to hurt the religious feelings of any person), of the Indian Penal Code and are currently in police custody.
