45 Travel-Size Beauty Products Our Editor’s Recommend Packing For Your Next Trip

If there’s one job I absolutely hate, it’s packing. You’re either one of those people who is super organised and packed weeks in adance, or you’re someone who packs at the 11th hour and gets on the plane swearing you forgot something. My downfall usually always happens while I’m trying to pack all my makeup, skincare and haircare products. But after travelling so much in the last few years, I’ve learnt that the key to successfully not over packing (and going over your luggage allowance) is travel-sized beauty products.

While it might feel like a costly investment, having a makeup, skincare and haircare go-bags (one’s you specially leave packed for travel), make your lift 10 times easier. Most beauty brands these days make mini version of their best-sellers that you can usually buy for pretty cheap, so you can leave your full sized bottles, pots and palettes at home.

If you’re yet to jump on the travel-sized beauty bandwagon, I’m here to convert you. I’ve rounded up a bunch of travel-sized makeup, skincare, and haircare products worth scoping out before your next trip. Let’s get into it, shall we?!

The Best Travel-Sized Skincare Products

Naturally, you’ll want to use minis of the skincare you already use. However, some brands don’t actually make travel-sized beauty products, so you’ll have to decant your creams, cleansers, and serums to take with you — which, if you’ve ever tried doing it before, can be such a fuck around.

Personally, I’d rather buy some travel-sized beauty products I know either A) do the job or B) I’ve always wanted to try and use it as an opportunity to change up my skincare routine. It’s how I discovered my love for the NZ brand Emma Lewisham. I bought the Emma Lewisham Essentials ($145) before going on a big trip, as I’d always wanted to try the range. I ended up loving it and buying the bigger versions when I got home.

It’s also important to remember that you don’t have to travel with a whole 10-step skincare routine, especially if you wanna conserve your precious luggage allowance. Choose a travel-sized beauty bundle that contains like three or four products, max, like the Estée Lauder All Day Radiance Set Mini ($75) or the Byoma So Hydrated Set ($32). They each come with the skincare essentials — cleansers, creams and serums — and won’t take up too much space in your luggage.

When you’re travelling, you also wanna double down on skincare that’s convenient, like makeup wipes. While they’re probably not the best for day-to-day use, a pack like the Shiseido Basic Care Refreshing Cleansing Sheets ($24) is super handy when travelling. You can wipe away the day before jumping into your fuller routine (or at least do the bare minimum to take off your makeup if you’re too tired after a night out or a long day on public transport).

Of course, if you’re taking a long-haul flight to your destination, we recommend the viral Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask ($43). It’s perfect for lathering on at the start of your flight and letting it soak in for 10 minutes before wiping it off to keep your skin hydrated.

Then, we’d recommend layering a serum like ILIA’s The Base Face Milk (from $46) or Merit Beauty’s Great Skin Instant Glow Serum ($29) and face cream like Merit Beauty’s Great Skin Moisturizer Priming Moisturizer ($29) or Charlotte Tilbury Charlotte’s Magic Water Cream ($50) to really lock in the moisture before you get sucked dry in that big metal tube.

The only product we haven’t mentioned yet is SPF. We 100 per cent recommend packing a good SPF for every holiday. Brands like Ultra Violette, La Roche Posay, Naked Sundays and Mecca Cosmetica all sell travel-sized sunscreen.

The Best Travel-Sized Makeup Products

Now, onto makeup. Luckily for us, most makeup brands make really good travel-sized beauty products. So you might not have to start too far from your faves. However, we do have a few really good recommendations worth shouting out in case you need some minis.

When it comes to a good base, Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Flawless Filter ($27) comes in a mini version, so you can leave the big bottle at home — and both Tarte (Shape Tape Ultra Creamy Concealer Travel-Size $23) and Kosas (Revealer Concealer Mini $26) make travel versions of their best-selling concealers.

For blush, bronzer and highlighters, you can’t really go past Rare Beauty’s mini Positive Light Liquid Luminizer ($30) and Soft Pinch Dewy Liquid Blush ($27) or Westman Atelier’s cult-famous Petite Baby Cheeks Blush Stick ($43). All three will save you space in your makeup bag while lasting a fair few trips!

Moving onto the eyes, Too Faced’s much-loved Better Than Sex Volumising Mascara ($26) comes in a mini, as does Huda Beauty’s Precision Liquid Liner ($19). You can even get your hands on Urban Decays Naked 3 Palette ($59) in a travel-sized version.

If you’re anything like me, you’re likely to just do brows and skin while on holidays, so lucky for us, Anastasia Beverly Hills’ best-selling Brow Wiz ($24) comes in a travel-sized version that you can pack alongside the mini Benefit Cosmetics’ Gimme Brow+ Volumizing Eyebrow Gel ($28) for big, beautiful holiday brows.

You can’t really go past Charlotte Tilbury’s mini Pillow Talk Lip And Cheek Set ($82). It has everything you need while on holiday, including a lip liner, lipstick, lip gloss and a highlighter, for good measure.

To set all you’re products, you’re probably going to want to pack the travel sized version of Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray ($31) and Laura Mercier’s travel-sized Translucent Loose Setting Powder ($44).

Finally, you don’t need to travel with all your makeup brushes, a good, simple kit like the Sigma Beauty Essential Travel Brush Set Mini ($147) should have you covered. It even comes with a travel case, so you don’t have to give up prime real estate in your makeup bag.

The Best Travel-Sized Haircare Products

Travelling with haircare products and tools is often where most of the bulky packing comes from, so it’s important that if you’re on the road, you invest in some travel-sized hair products. When it comes to good quality travel-sized shampoo, conditioner and hairspray, Kevin Murphy has some of the best options. Basically, the entire range comes in 40ml bottles and starts at $8.

If your hair can skip a wash or two while you’re away, but you’ll still need treatment here and there, Olaplex ($54) and Kérastase ($55) both offer travel-sized versions of their best-sellers.

As for hot tools, the good folks over at Bondi Boost just dropped travel-sized versions of the best-selling multi-styler and blowout brush — Bondi Boost Mini Multi-Styler ($82), Bondi Boost Mini Blowout Brush ($68) — that are under $100. And ghd also sell a mini version of its much-loved straightner, Professional Slim Plate Styler ($310).

Naturally, unless you’re like me and never brush your hair, you’ll also need a good boar bristle brush for the road; we recommend Dry Bar’s Mini Flat Mate Boar Bristle Brush ($85).

The Best Travel-Sized Bodycare Products

We recommend keeping your body care super simple when going on holiday. All you need is a good body cleanser, a lotion or moisturiser, deodorant, fragrance and potentially some self-tanner.

There are a few good travel sets we’d recommend, like Fresh’s Body Nourishing Duo Mini ($34) and Salt & Stone’s Black Rose & Oud Mini Trio ($59). Fresh’s set is a nourishing milk-based cleanser and lotion duo, while the Salt & Stone set comes with a body wash, lotion and the brand’s best-selling deodorant set.

Bangn Body also sells a really good Travel Trio ($68) that includes an exfoliator, body lotion, and lip balm.

Naturally, you’re going to want to take a fragrance on your travels, and thankfully, most brands offer a travel-sized version of their perfumes. Retailers like Sephora and Mecca both have plenty of options in store, so you can go and sniff out a good one. If you don’t have time for that, we highly recommend the Goldfield & Banks Sunset Hour Travel Spray Duo ($92) or any of their duos, really. They all smell so delicious and are formulated right here in Australia.

Finally, having a little self-tanner while you’re on holiday is always handy, but most of them come in big, bulky bottles, so we’d recommend choosing something smaller like the Tan-Luxe The Body Self Tanner Mini ($32). They’re tanning drops that you add to your moisturiser for an all-over glow.

The Best Travel Face Masks, Eye Masks & Pimple Patches

Wearing sheet masks, eye masks and face masks on planes is becoming more and more normalised, and we’re about it. Load up on that extra hydration to avoid getting all moisture sucked out of your skin on a flight. Honestly, if you forget your skincare on a long-haul flight, you feel like a sultana by the time you land.

If you don’t already have a favourite face mask, we recommend Go-To’s Transformazing Face Masks ($55). It’s loaded with skin-loving, hydrating ingredients and are pretty affordable. If you’d prefer to start smaller than a full-on sheet mask, you could try just some undereye masks, like these ones from MECCA COSMETICA Bright Eyed Eye Mask (from $8) or these from Starskin VIP The Gold Eye Masks ($44) they come in single sets or sets of five and are designed to hydrate and brighten under-eye skin, help reduce the appearance of fine lines and puffiness — which we all need after a flight.

Of course, we recommend packing the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask ($31) — IYKYK — and if you don’t, trust us. If you’d prefer a sheet mask for your lips while you sleep (it basically doubles as mouth tape), we’ve heard good things about the Sephora Collection Cherry Lip Mask ($6).

And finally, it’s always a good idea to pack a set of pimple patches. We love TBH Skincare’s Patch It Up – Multi-Size Pimple Patches ($19.95).

The Best Clear Travel-Sized Makeup Cases

Having the right makeup cases for travel is somewhat crucial. You either need a decent-sized one that holds most of your travel-sized beauty products, like the Etoile Clear Makeup Travel Case ($75), to store all your makeup, skincare, and haircare in. Otherwise, you need a multi-pack, like the Prene Clear Organiser Case Set, ($49.95), that you can separate your goodies into.

As for carry-on, the product allowance for domestic and international changes depends on your carrier, so it’s worth sussing out their Ts&Cs to make sure you don’t end up with beauty products in the bin. Once you know your product limit and recommended sizing, you’ll wanna pop them all in a clear makeup bag like the Cee Clear Small Cosmetic Case ($65) to meet that travel requirements.

Now, just because your carry-on needs to be clear, it doesn’t mean the makeup bag you pop in your luggage has to be. You can go for a makeup bag that is as big and colourful as you like. Personally, we like the Spell Renew Quilted Large Makeup Bag ($69), it’s spacious, beautiful and machine washable if you have any makeup mishaps. You can also find some super cute and functional options from Astala Luna, like this Amelie Hair Tool Bag ($69), the shape of the bag makes it perfect for carrying all your longer hot tools, instead of cramming them into a regular sized makeup bag.
