Tragic scenes have occurred at a preschool in regional Victoria after a truck crashed into the building, taking the life of one woman and injuring one child.
At around 2.20pm, the Macedon Ranges Montessori Preschool at Riddells Creek, Victoria, was struck by a McKenzie Water truck. Emergency services quickly responded to the site of the crash.
According to a statement from Victoria Police, it is believed the truck was travelling down the main road before it “hit a power pole, veered off the road and crashed” into the educational centre.
“A 43-year-old Sunbury woman died at the scene,” read the statement.
The woman is yet to be formally identified.
A three-year-old child was also injured by the horrific accident, and has been taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries to their arm.
The driver of the truck has been identified by police as a 68-year-old Broadford man, who was taken to hospital and will be interviewed by investigators.
Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are currently looking into what caused the crash.
Owner of the water tanker company Alan McKenzie has released a statement following the accident saying that it is “devastated” by the crash.
“This is an incredibly distressing time and our deepest sympathies go to those involved and their families and friends,” read McKenzie’s statement.
“We thank staff and emergency workers who responded. We are assisting authorities with their investigations.”
McKenzie also shared that the reason behind the crash was apparently the 68-year-old driver having a “medical episode” while behind the wheel.
