For those who have never shared a home with a pet, their behavior might sometimes seem bizarre at best. Take cats, for instance; often cute, sometimes grumpy, and almost always weird, they might surprise their owners by climbing atop something high, squeezing within something smol, or engaging in other unexpected behavior.

But for those familiar with cat demeanor, these are in no way out of the ordinary.

Talking about cat behavior and the things they tend to do on the day-to-day, feline expert and author of Let's Talk About Cats.: Conversations On Feline Behaviour, Anita Kelsey, explained a common peculiarity—felines’ urge to make themselves fits in random places.

“Cats like boxes, as they see them not only as safe spaces where they can hide and observe but also because they are comfortable and secure. (Many cats also like biting into the edges of boxes as they like chomping down on the texture of cardboard, which easily breaks apart.) We may find the places cats choose unusual, but they probably see them as normal resting places.”

The cat expert added that anything up high could also be a cat’s preference, since it typically works as a good observation post. Something close to a source of heat or a good hiding spot would do, too.

For those seeking to learn more about cat behavior by opening their homes to one (or a few), the expert in feline behavior suggests thinking carefully about your lifestyle and the cat’s daily life.

“Do you have enough space for the cat? Are you around a lot or do you work long hours and socialize a lot in your downtime? Do you have the finances to pay for insurance, vet bills, food, cat scratchers, toys, climbers, and similar expenses?”

Other things that are worth considering before getting a cat, according to Anita Kelsey, include the environment the cat would be living in: is there a secure outside space for it to enjoy? Do you have the environment for the breed of cat you want?

In addition to that, Kelsey suggested that if you’re thinking of getting a kitten, it’s a good idea to get two, so they have a playmate.

The reason it’s important to ask yourself all these questions before getting a cat is because some things in their new home can have a detrimental effect on their behavior. According to Kelsey, one of the most important ones is the territory and the stress within or outside of said territory, such as another cat in the same household or a neighboring cat that the new resident might not get along with.

Other things that can have a negative impact on feline behavior include boredom and being left alone for long periods of time, as well as medical conditions, as many cats change their behavior when they are ill or in pain.

If the environment is suitable and the pet is loved, their demeanor will most likely show it. Brown Veterinary Hospital suggested that some telltale signs to be on the lookout for, if you want to make sure your critter is content, include frequent purring, active play and exploration, and healthy eating habits.

Happy felines also tend to socialize with other pets in the household and interact with their environment; they also groom themselves regularly and maintain a calm and relaxed posture.
