A 41-year-old man has been charged over a fatal crash and string of alleged carjackings at gunpoint on the Sunshine Coast yesterday.

As reported by ABC News, the man, who was driving a red Porsche, has been charged with 15 offenses following the incident, including armed robbery, dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death, possessing dangerous drugs, and the unlawful possession of a firearm.

He has also been charged with failing to remain at the incident and driving on a suspended licence, as well as driving while affected by an intoxicating substance.

The man is expected to face the Maroochydore Magistrates Court today.

Police said further charges may be laid, the publication reported.

Police were called to the scene on the Bruce Highway at Palmview on Monday afternoon, following reports of a pile-up of six vehicles after the man allegedly lost control of his Porsche and crashed into a Nissan Micra.

The 22-year-old female passenger of the Micra died from her injuries while the driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

It’s understood the man was armed with a gun when he got out of the Porsche armed with a gun got out of the Porsche, approached a white SsangYong Rexton and shot the male driver in the arm. Investigators do not believe the two men knew each other.

The man then allegedly stole the Rexton and the car was later found crashed in Landsborough around 12:35 pm.

It is alleged the man later hijacked another car, a grey Mazda 3, at gunpoint before being arrested.

Speaking to reporters on Monday afternoon, Queensland Police Chief Inspector Jason Overland said a young male doing driver training with his mum and dad were inside that car when it was “hijacked”.

“I’ve given up trying to work out why,” he said.

“It’s just a tragedy and we’re doing all we can to address what’s left.”

Anyone with information about what happened, including dash cam or CCTV footage, are urged to contact investigators.
