NSW Police have arrested a man following the death of a woman who fell from the balcony of a seventh-floor unit in western Sydney. Police have also confirmed that Triple Zero was called two hours before the woman fell.
At about 1.40am Thursday, January 2, authorities were called to a high-rise unit block on River Road, Parramatta. When they arrived, a woman, believed to be aged 39, was found on the street suffering multiple injuries.
Police attempted to revive her, but despite their efforts, the woman couldn’t be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The woman has yet to be formally identified.
Authorities have since established a crime scene and launched an investigation into the woman’s death, with officers speaking to several people at the unit block.
Investigators say they’ve been told that the woman fell from the balcony of her seventh-floor unit.
Following the incident, a 40-year-old man — who police allege to be the woman’s partner — was arrested.
Triple Zero was called before the incident
NSW Police Detective Superintendent Barry Vincent confirmed that emergency services had been called prior to the fall, 9News reports.
Vincent said a call was made at about 11.45pm. However, no communication could be heard from the caller, except “raised voices”.
Following the first call, Triple Zero attempted to reconnect with the caller but were unable to get an answer.
At about 11.47pm, NSW Police called the number, where they spoke to a man who confirmed his name and address. Vincent said police said officers agreed to attend the man’s address but didn’t give him a specific time.
At about 1.40am, police received a call from a bystander on River Road who claimed they “saw a woman hanging from the seven-floor balcony of a high-rise unit block”.
Vincent said police were on the scene by 1.41am, where they discovered the woman in the driveway of the unit block.
The superintendent confirmed the man they spoke to on the phone was the same man who is in custody, and added the address the woman had fallen from was his address and not hers as she was believed to live elsewhere.
Vincent continued to share that the pair have had “previous interaction” with the police, but couldn’t confirm if they were a couple at the time of her death.
He also added the man had an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO) in place for his protection, but couldn’t confirm if the same AVO involved the 39-year-old woman as she’s yet to be formally identified.
At the time of writing, no charges have been laid against the man and he currently remains in custody at Paramatta Police Station.
