A 4-year-old boy who went missing at a lake in Fresno County, California, on Thursday has been found safe after surviving nearly 24 hours alone in the woods, the sheriff’s office confirmed.
Christian Ramirez was discovered by members of the Tulare County Search and Rescue Team around 8 a.m. on Friday, approximately a quarter mile away from where he was last seen. The young boy was found under a tree, tired and hungry but in good condition.
Fortunately, Christian responded to the searchers' calls, enabling his rescue. Fresno County Sheriff’s Lt. Brandon Pursell expressed gratitude for the successful outcome, emphasizing the potential dangers the child faced in the wilderness.
Despite being only three feet tall and weighing 40 pounds, Christian managed to endure a night in the woods wearing just a t-shirt and shorts. The area where he was found is known to be inhabited by bears, big cats, snakes, and other hazards.
The family reported Christian missing from their campsite at the Rancheria Campground in Huntington Lake around 11 a.m. on Thursday. Search and Rescue teams, along with various agencies and volunteers, immediately mobilized to locate the boy.
Over 70 rescuers, including dogs, helicopters, and law enforcement officers, tirelessly searched through the night. The collaborative efforts of the community, with many individuals offering assistance, spreading awareness on social media, and sending prayers, played a crucial role in Christian's safe return.
The sheriff’s office commended the teamwork and dedication displayed during the search, highlighting the combined efforts of more than 50 deputies and volunteers from various agencies.
Christian has since been reunited with his family, with authorities emphasizing the importance of vigilance and safety in outdoor environments, especially when children are involved.
