We’re about a quarter of the way through the 2023 season, and we have learned some things about the New Orleans Saints. The team currently stands at 2-2 on the season after losing the last two games. The season has already seen its fair share of ups and downs and turmoil.
Saints fans collectively held their breath when Derek Carr went down with a shoulder injury. Alvin Kamara served his suspension while Marcus Maye is in the midst of one of his own.
Here are the four things we learned about New Orleans Saints through four games
1
Offensive playcalling is still an issue
This was an issue in 2022 and a big discussion point in the offseason. In the first game of the year vs. the Tennessee Titans, it seemed as if play calling was improved. Olave was running routes out of the backfield. Creativity like that has disappeared in favor of reverses with Derek Carr and Alvin Kamara and deep shots on third and short. Heading into Week 5, questions on if Pete Carmichael should hand over play calling duties are already prevalent.
2
Trevor Penning is developing
There was reason to be concerned after Trevor Penning’s season debut. Some were ready to write him off. It was always important to remember this was basically his rookie year. He’s shown development already throughout the first four games, and that should have been expected. He went from the weakest link in Week 1 to not even being a talking point the last two games.
3
The defense is good but not great
The defense is a good unit and the strength of the team. The last five quarters of football showcase they can be beaten. When you look back, there were moments of doubt earlier in the season. The Saints dominated the Panthers. The Titans were able to move the ball into Saints territory many times, but the Saints kept them out of the end zone.
They typically does a good job of keeping points off the board and forcing turnovers. Those abilities are why they are a really good unit. However, teams have moved the ball on the Saints too much for them to be labeled dominant just yet.
4
The wide receiver trio is as good as advertised
Chris Olave, Michael Thomas, and Rashid Shaheed all are very talented and have shown it this year. They each have carved out a role for themselves that has led them to success. The question if the trio hits their ceiling is squarely on play calling and usage. The value each of them brings to the offense is clear despite the offense’s struggles as a whole.
