The first day of workouts kicked off on Thursday at the NFL Scouting Combine. For the Pittsburgh Steelers this will be a first opportunity to see many of the players they have already met with on the field working out. This 2024 NFL draft class wasted no time getting off to a fast start. here are our four big takeaways from the first day of workouts.
When it comes to CBs, they don't have a type
The Steelers met with a wide variety of the top cornerbacks from Alabama’s Terrion Arnold to Iowa’s Cooper DeJean. The Steelers met with guys who project as natural boundary corners and others who look to specialize in the slot.
Steelers spying defensive tackles
The Steelers met with multiple top defensive tackles ahead of workouts and this group did not disappoint on Thursday. One player that really stood out and is literally impossible to miss was Texas defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat. Sweat was so impressive at 366 pounds and would be a perfect nose tackle for Pittsburgh
Payton Wilson set himself apart
Going into the offseason, it was neck and neck between Payton Wilson and Edgerrin Cooper for the top inside linebacker in the draft. Wilson’s 4.44 unofficial 40-yard dash time along with a very strong interview with the press, Wilson could have heavily put himself in the first-round conversation.
Markus Golden moving on
The Steelers met with multiple edge defenders at the combine and this almost certainly points to the Steelers moving on from veteran Markus Golden and replacing him with a rookie. It also points to Nick Herbig taking on a much larger role at the No. 3 edge.
