4 Of The Wildest ‘Severance’ Theories About WTF Is Actually Going On

If there’s anything we can count on after watching a brain-busting episode of Severance, it’s that the internet will always provide just-as-wild theories that get our heads spinning.

Season two’s penultimate episode – ‘The After Hours’ – was just dropped, and the hype for the season finale has never been stronger. Irving (John Turturro) and his adorable pup Radar were the highlight, IMHO.

We’ve jotted down a handful of new theories the internet has to offer about what we might expect next week, ranging from the probable to the absolute batshit.

Spoilers for the most recent episode ahead!! This is your first and only warning.

A recap of Severance Season 2 Episode 9: ‘The After Hours’

The previous episode, ‘Sweet Vitriol’, focused almost exclusively on Harmony Cobel (Patricia Arquette) and saw her back at her hometown of Salt Neck – revealing heaps of juicy info about her mysterious background and involvement with Lumon.

Turns out that Cobel just so happened to invent technologies (if not, the entire practice) of severance, implying that she also was a victim of child labour when Lumon first opened factories in Salt Neck.

This episode opened up with Helena Eagan (Britt Lower) ominously eating a boiled egg alongside her father and Lumon CEO Jame Eagan (Michael Siberry), while Miss Huang (Sarah Bock) smashes an Eagan toy by the behest of Milchick (Tramell Tillman).

Dylan’s outie (Zach Cherry) is then told by his wife Gretchen (Merritt Wever) that she kissed his innie, which he isn’t all too happy with.

Meanwhile, Irving sees his dog staring at something in his home, which is then revealed to be Burt (Christopher Walken) who speculates that Lumon might be connected to “several recent disappearances or deaths”.

An unmoving Gemma (Dichen Lachman) is being observed by Dr. Mauer (Robby Benson), who complains that the Cold Harbor file is still stuck at 96 per cent. Drummond (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson) calls up Milchick to ask where Mark (Adam Scott) is, who then calls Mark who does not pick up.

Our queen Helly is then shown being back at the Lumon office, before storming to Milchick and asks where Mark is, who didn’t show up to work (he’s instead stuck in a car winding down a very snowy road).

Gretchen then goes to Lumon and tells innie Dylan that they can’t see each other anymore, leading to him proposing to Gretchen which she refuses in one of the show’s most heartbreaking scenes.

Give my man Dylan a break!!!

The episode sees a whole bunch of characters heading in different directions; Dylan resigns from the company in front of Milchick and Miss Huang, Irving and his dog are driven by Burt to a train station, and Mark is snuck into Lumon’s birthing cabins by Cobel, activating his innie.

All the new Severance fan theories

With only one episode left to go, fans (like myself) are absolutely buzzing with theories on what the hell is about to happen next, which is why we scoured the web for some of the best ones we reckon might just be true…

Lumon is working on resurrecting Kier Eagan

Reddit, like always, is to thank for some of the absolute wildest theories and this one is no different. The founder of Lumon industries (and Helena’s ancestor) is seen and treated like a deity within the show, so it wouldn’t exactly be out of the question that resurrecting Kier might be a key focus of the company.

The Reddit user also mentioned that Lumon is using Gemma as a guinea pig for this, and as soon as Cold Harbor hits 100 per cent we might see Kier brought back from the dead.

    Only time will tell.

The goats are the Lumon board

OK, we’ve talked about what the actual hell is with all the goats in the show heaps before, but we reckon we’re still holding hope for this one.

We’ll skim through this one quickly, but the gist of this one is that the mysterious board of directors are never seen or heard on the show, and there’s a whole heap of goats everywhere. Put two and two together, and you’ve got a company secretly run by goats.

Probably a bit far-fetched, sure, but we’re still holding out hope for all-knowing goat overlords. (Plus, Zach Cherry seemed here for it!!)

Lumon is using child labour to bio-engineer humans

The previous episode was rife with implications that Harmony began working at Lumon’s factory as a child and Miss Huang herself is quite literally a minor, so this seems like it’s practically canon (without outright mentioning it).

A reason why Lumon might be so keen on child labour (aside from exploitation for profits), is that the company might be interested in instilling children with severance chips and that Cold Harbor is set on creating fully-severed individuals from birth, according to this Redditor.

These children would act as fully-subservient to Lumon and would exist solely for Lumon’s sake, and maybe the company is using goats to test out this method?

Out of all theories so far, this one seems to be the most likely (but who knows!!).

      Ricken is secretly an Eagan

Ricken (Michael Chernus) is Mark’s brother-in-law and is mostly used as the show’s comic relief, but there may be something deeper to Ricken than what meets the eye.

Reddit users have thrown around some wild theories that Ricken is a lot more powerful than the show has made him out to be so far, mentioning that Ricken’s home happens to feature a very suspicious goat sculpture

So what the HELL does this mean???? (Source: Reddit)

This could just be a coincidence, but why else would there be a freaking goat in his house??? All signs point to Ricken being a secret Eagan (possibly).

With next week’s episode being the season finale, all we can hope for is that we’ll get some more insight and answers into Severance’s increasingly-mysterious world.

And for the love of all that is holy, just tell us what is going on with the bloody goats!!!
