Glad you owned the top-performing "Magnificent Seven" S&P 500 stocks this year? You should be — and you're in good company.
The top owners of these seven winning stocks, including Mark Zuckerberg at Meta Platforms, Jeff Bezos at Amazon.com, Elon Musk at Tesla and Vanguard at the rest, hauled in nearly half a trillion dollars on them just this year, says an Investor's Business Daily analysis of data from S&P Global Market Intelligence and MarketSmith. This is based on their current holdings.
Such wealth generation shows just how top-heavy the S&P 500 has become. The mind-boggling gains for a handful of investors just this year are larger than 489 S&P 500 companies are individually worth.
"Participation was limited as the 'Magnificent Seven' drove market returns and a measure of equal-weighted S&P 500 stocks struggled to keep up with the cap-weighted Index," said John Lynch, chief investment officer for Comerica Wealth Management.
Magnificent Seven Winners
Talk about a comeback for Meta's Zuckerberg. Thanks to a 194% rally in the social media giant's shares this year, the value of his 347.2 million shares gained more than $80 billion. That gain makes him the largest individual winner on an S&P 500 stock this year.
Zuckerberg's gain even makes Bezos' $69 billion gain on his Amazon.com stock this year look less impressive. Bezos sold some shares this year, but still remains the online retailer's No. 1 shareholder with nearly a billion shares. The stock is up more than 83% this year.
But this year's Magnificent Seven stocks gains weren't just for billionaires.
Vanguard Brings Wealth To The Masses
It's also important to note, you didn't have to be a Bezos or Musk to score on these enormous S&P 500 winners this year.
Showing the rising power of index investing, Vanguard is now the No. 1 largest owner of four of the Magnificent Seven stocks. That includes Microsoft, Apple, Nvidia and Alphabet. Just this year, Vanguard one of the largest providers of ETFs, scored $287 billion on these stocks in total.
And overall, the wealth generated by these seven companies is enormous. All told their value rose $5.2 trillion just this year — accounting for more than 60% of the entire S&P 500's $8.2 trillion value gain this year.
That's magnificent for any investors with a stake of any size.
