£4 B&Q item instantly makes any home warmer and can slash energy bills and get rid of mould, says expert

A building expert says people can slash energy bills and stop mould from appearing in their homes with a simple £4 plastic sheet that can be found at B&Q. According to the ex-builder, the sheets keep the home warmer and can ultimately prevent dangerous mould.

Clive Holland is an ex-builder, but now works as a broadcaster on Fix Radio - which is a radio station specifically aimed at tradespeople. In an interview with the Sun, Clive recommended purchasing film sheets which are specifically designed to insulate windows. The sheets keep warmth in, which both reduces energy bills and keeps mould at bay.

He told the publication: "You can buy specific cling-film packs to go on various-sized windows. Putting film on your window as secondary glazing does actually work. It helps keep heat in, plus it prevents condensation build up, while also blocking any draughts.”

Explaining how to fit the window sheets, Clive said: "Begin by cleaning the surface, so you have no mould. Then cut the plastic sheet to the right size and smooth it along the frame. At first, it will look saggy and horrible. But don’t worry about this, just make sure you have a really good seal. Once you take the hairdryer to it, it will shrink back into position."

Clive added: "It’s such a simple technique, but it’s really effective. It will wrap the window so tightly, it will prevent any warmth from leaving through cracks. It will also stop any moisture from building up."

We took a look around, and some of the cheapest window insulation sheets can be found at B&Q. A pack of two window sheets is £7.99 - working out at a very reasonable £4 per sheet.

Clive advises against using cling film for the same thing. He said: "I do know people who use normal cling film, but I just don’t think it’s as good. It’s very thin, and once you put the hairdryer on it, it can just perish and not take the heat.

"For me, the home window insulation kits are much better. They are also readily-available online or from your local DIY store.”

You can buy the 2 pack Window Insulation Kit Shrink Fit Double Glazing Film Draught Excluder Heat for £7.99 on the B&Q website here. Other options are available elsewhere.
