39 Y.O. Canberra Woman Dies After Snorkelling Boat Capsizes In Bali

An incident has unfolded off the coast of Bali, Indonesia, where a snorkelling boat capsized in rough seas, claiming the life of a Canberra woman and injuring two other Australians.

The accident occurred on Friday as the Sea Dragon boat was en route from Bali to the popular tourist island of Nusa Penida.

The group of 13 people, including several Australian tourists, were enjoying the underwater scenery when disaster struck. A massive wave swept over the boat, throwing 39-year-old Anna Maree into the water. A second wave then capsized the vessel in the turbulent waters of Kelingking, according to local police spokesperson Agus Widiono, per Sydney Morning Herald.

A nearby boat quickly responded to the distress call, rescuing 12 survivors from the choppy waters. Unfortunately, Maree’s body was also recovered, and she was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Among the injured were reportedly Gabriel Hijniakoff, a 28-year-old from Brisbane, and Cintamani Warrington, a 32-year-old Australian living in Bali.

One of the injured tourists reportedly suffered burns on their upper thighs, possibly due to engine heat. Both are in stable condition and are expected to be airlifted to a larger hospital in Denpasar for further treatment.

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has been contacted regarding the incident.
