A 35-year-old man who police claim has a significant history of domestic violence has been charged with murdering his estranged wife, Khouloud Bakkour Hawatt, in Sydney‘s south-west.
Police were called to Hawatt’s home in Belmore after they received calls that a woman was in distress on Wednesday morning. Eight minutes later, authorities arrived to the scene to find the 31-year-old mother of five dead.
Shortly after, police arrested her husband, Talaat Hawatt. He was taken to Campbelltown Police Station where he was charged with murder (DV), contravene ADVO, use prohibited weapon contrary to the prohibition order and fail to comply with digital evidence access order direction.
“Crime scene [police] are investigating and it does look like it is a very violent murder scene,” Campsie Superintendent Sheridan Waldau told reporters on Wednesday.
It’s claimed Hawatt had been a repeat domestic violence offender.
Waldau stated that the last interaction police had with Hawatt were compliant checks back in August this year.
“There was only minimal interaction with him that Campsie police have had in the last 12 months,” Waldau said.
“So at this stage there is nothing that Campsie police have failed to do, or NSW Police have failed to do, that we can see in any of the matters that we’ve had with him.”
He is due to appear at Campbelltown Local Court on Thursday.
According to Destroy the Joint, a watchdog which keeps a tally of women killed due to violence across Australia, 74 women have been killed this year — 10 more than in 2023. This number does not include certain deaths in which court cases and coronial hearings are not yet finalised.
