On Thursday, at least 33 individuals were detained on Indiana University's campus after engaging in encampment protests. The Indiana University Police, along with the Indiana State Police, issued multiple warnings to the protesters throughout the morning and afternoon. Authorities informed the group that if they removed their structures, they would be permitted to remain on campus, as per a statement from the Indiana University Police Department.
Despite the warnings, the protesters refused to comply with university policy. Consequently, they were instructed to vacate the area. A final warning was issued at 3:46 pm, and by 3:57 pm, individuals who persisted in their refusal were detained and removed from the premises. The 33 individuals were subsequently taken to the Monroe County Justice Center, while police maintained vigilance over ongoing activities on campus.
In response to the incident, a university spokesperson emphasized Indiana University Bloomington's commitment to fostering free speech and open dialogue. However, the spokesperson underscored the importance of adhering to university policies to ensure the safety and security of the IU community and prevent disruptions to university operations. Expressive activities, including the installation of temporary structures, are required to be conducted in accordance with university free speech and events policies, which mandate advanced approval for such activities.
