£324 Cost of Living Payment should be paid to most by today- but some will get it later

People who claim means-tested benefits should be paid their second Cost of Living Payment by today.

The DWP states that those who claimed Universal Credit, Income-based JSA, Income-related ESA, Income Support or Pension Credit between August 26 and September 25 get the £324 payment between Tuesday November 8 and Wednesday November 23.

Those who qualify for the payment through Tax Credits only should be paid by Wednesday November 30.

"DWP claimants will receive their second Cost of Living payment by 23 November 2022, and eligible tax credit claimants, on no other means-tested benefits, will receive it between 23 and 30 November 2022," the DWP said.

Around 397,000 families in the North East have had or will get the payments.

The £324 payment follows a £326 payment made to most in July. Together they total £650.

How to check if you have received £324 Cost of Living Payment

If you claim income-based benefits from the DWP, like Universal Credit or JSA, you must have been claiming between August 26 and September 25 to qualify for a payment due by today. Those who are due the payment through claiming Tax Credits - and no other income-based benefits - may be paid later, up until November 30.

If you claim Universal Credit or other income-based benefits, you should be paid by the end of Wednesday November 23. Look in your bank account for a payment reference which includes your national insurance number followed by "DWP COL" for a payment of £324.

Those who get the payment through Tax Credits should search for the "HMRC COLS" payment reference.

Why you may be paid £324 Cost of Living Payment later

As mentioned above, Tax Credit claimants may get the payment later than November 23, but by November 30.

Those who claim income-based benefits like Universal Credit may get their £324 payment later than November 23 if their circumstances have changed.

The DWP says: "Your payment might come later, for example if you are awarded a qualifying benefit at a later date or you change the account your benefit or tax credits are paid into. You will still be paid the Cost of Living Payment automatically and do not need to contact DWP or HMRC."

It adds : For DWP claimants eligible for the £324 payment, in a small minority of complex circumstances, households may be paid after 23 November 2022 – for example, if they were deemed unable to claim certain benefits, but won backdated entitlement on appeal, or where payments were rejected due to invalid account details. The DWP will seek to contact claimants directly in the very small minority of cases where there are issues or delays."
