31 rejected asylum seekers expelled this year

31 asylum seekers who have had their applications rejected have been expelled so far this year.

A further 507 were issued with deportation orders but officials do not know whether they have left yet.

Figures for the past five years up until June 16 last show 5,150 deportation notices were issued by the state against those refused asylum.

The authorities say they have confirmation that 790 left the state during the time.

The busiest year for deportations was 2019, when 2,295 were issued.

Only 33 were issued at the height of the Covid pandemic in 2021.

Reacting to the figures the Justice Minister Helen McEntee said: "The deportation and removal processes are an essential part of any immigration system.

"It must be acknowledged that those who do not have a legal right to remain in this country must remove themselves from the state.

"A person subject to a Deportation Order has no legal basis to remain in the state.

"Their case to remain has been considered in detail and all available appeals processes have been exhausted.

"The numbers for Deportation Orders effected does not take into account of individuals who have left the state without informing my Department.

"It is the case that many individuals who are subject to Deportation Orders leave the state without notifying the relevant authorities and this particular category of individual is difficult to quantify."

The Minister was responding to a written Dail question from Sinn Fein Kildare South TD Patricia Ryan.
