With Eagles training camp now a month away, we’re looking at the 30 most important Eagles of 2023, and running back Rashaad Penny lands at No. 25 on the list.
A powerful runner and homerun threat, Penny will look to re-establish himself among the league’s top running backs playing behind the NFL’s top offensive line.
Background
Position: Running Back
Age: 27
Experience: 6th year pro
2023 cap hit: $1,230,000
2022 recap
Penny had a 151-yard, two-touchdown performance against Detroit in 2022, but suffered a season-ending leg injury against New Orleans while averaging 6.1 yards per carry through four-plus games.
On the season, Penny had 57 carries for 346 yards and two touchdowns before breaking his leg in Week 5.
2023 outlook
When healthy, Penny is one of the most productive running backs in the NFL, averaging 5.7 yards per carry for his career, and 6 yards per carry over the past two years.
The addition of D’Andre Swift may have eliminated any shot at Penny becoming the lead running back.
Big question: How involved
If Swift and Gainwell are the two top running backs, that’ll leave Penny to compete with Boston Scott, Trey Sermon, and Kennedy Brooks for the final one or two spots remaining on the team’s running back depth chart.
If Swift can stay healthy, it’s definitely out of the question for the former Seahawks running back to log 10-12 carries per game.
