Thirty members of the Iranian parliament have tested positive for the Omicron variant and are now in quarantine, lawmaker Abolfasl Abutorabi announced on Sunday.

The parliament now wants to carry out coronavirus tests on all 290 lawmakers to prevent further infections, he said, according to the Fars news agency.

Iran was one of the countries most affected by the coronavirus pandemic, but the situation became more stable in mid-2021 due to the expanded vaccination.

Cases have surged again amid the spread of the Omicron variant.

Health Minister Bahram Einollahi announced that Iran was enduring a sixth wave of the pandemic, urging people to get booster shots and to abide by the preventative precautions.

At least 44 Iranians have died from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours and around 22,000 new cases were detected.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, the country recorded 132,424 Covid-related deaths and 6.344 million infections, according to Iran’s Health Ministry.

More than 6,102,200 people have recovered from the disease, reported IRNA.
